Melvin and Enid Zuckerman, founders of the famous spa and wellness brand Canyon Ranch, have announced their retirement after nearly 40 years along with Jerrold Cohen. The three launched the brand with its flagship property Canyon Ranch in Tuscon in 1979. Since then, the brand has opened properties in Lennox, Massachusetts, and Kaplankaya, Turkey.

The move follows a series of major expansion at the wellness brand over the past few years. The brand just announced a new series of wellness tours in partnership with Oceania Cruises, building on an existing agreement to operate Canyon Ranch SpaClub at Sea facilities onboard Oceania ships. In 2014 Canyon Ranch also partnered with Celebrity Cruises to open Canyon Ranch SpaClub at Sea facilities, which were initially launched onboard 10 Celebrity ships. The seagoing spas offer signature Canyon ranch spa treatments and fitness offerings, as well as a beauty salon. The company also operates cruise ship spas onboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and ships from Regent Seven Seas Cruises. On land, the brand also operates a spa at The Venetian and The Palazzo hotels in Las Vegas.

The Canyon Ranch Wellness Resort at Kaplankaya marked the first international resort for the brand. Set along the waterfront in the Turkish Riviera near Bodrum, the resort has 48 enclave rooms, 18 enclave suites, 69 hotel rooms, and six hotel suites, centered around a 107,500 square foot spa and wellness center with 40 treatment rooms, Finnish saunas, igloos, steam rooms and more. What’s Next

Following their retirement the Zuckermans have said the brand will now be in the hands of company CEO Susan Docherty, who was appointed to the position in 2015. Before joining Canyon Ranch, Docherty spent 30 years at General Motors, during which time she was the first woman in the company’s 100 year history to be appointed and hold a corporate officer title as vice president of sales.

At Canyon Ranch Docherty has overseen the launch of the brand’s first international resort in Turkey, as well as its twentieth SpaClub at Sea location onboard the Seven Seas Explorer, which incorporates the brand’s first in-room Canyon Ranch spa suite. Docherty also led development of the Residences at Bellefontaine, 19 condominiums at the Massachusetts property. From 2015 to 2017, Docherty also oversaw a series of major executive appointments at the company, including that of Chief Operating Officer Thomas Klein and Chief Marketing Officer Kathleen Shea, as well as Global Directors of Resorts, Food and Beverage, Retail and Merchandising, Communications and more.
