Wildland Trekking, acquired by Intrepid Travel in 2022, has announced four new guided tours on the John Muir Trail (JMT) on the West Coast of the United States. The new JMT range includes a three-week expedition that culminates in summiting the tallest mountain in the continental U.S., Mount Whitney, which requires a permit and operates through a competitive lottery system. A standalone trip for those just interested in making a summit attempt has also been launched.
Hiking the JMT on one’s own requires an extensive resupply strategy and securing a highly competitive permit, which can sometimes take as long as two years for those even lucky to win the lottery. These guided tours are a new chance for trekkers to finally experience the hike.
The JMT is the 200-mile trek across the spine of the Sierra Nevada mountain range starting in California’s Mammoth and ending in Bishop. The hike starts around June Lake and Red Meadows, before getting right into Yosemite and the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Travelers that go the full distance cross the 13,200-foot-tall Forester Pass, the highest elevation on the JMT and near Sequoia National Park.
The new trips include:
- "John Muir Trail Expedition Backpack" (23 days)
- "John Muir Trail: Florence Lake to Yosemite" (12 days)
- "Mount Whitney Ascent with Horseback Support" (seven days)
- "John Muir Trail: Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne Meadows" (four days)
Wildland Trekking is known for its small group hiking tours led by experienced and professional guides and operates with a “leave no trace” mentality. For more information, visit www.wildlandtrekking.com.
