American Airlines to Drop JFK Flights to San Juan – What’s Next for Puerto Rico

American Airlines is ending its ending its flights between New York’s JFK Airport and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Tourism officials from Meet Puerto Rico discussed the change with Travel Agent during a recent visit to our New York offices.

As first reported by online flight tracker Routes Online, the American Airlines flights from JFK to San Juan will end as of this August. The airline had operated two daily flights between the two airports.

“There are two other carriers from New York – JetBlue and Delta – and I am sure they will seize the opportunity,” says Milton Segarra, president and CEO of Meet Puerto Rico.

In total Puerto Rico has 1,952 weekly nonstop and direct flights from the United States, according to the destination’s latest Air Access Report, which was released in December 2016. 31 of those are from the Northeastern United States, of which New York is a part. Combined the three airlines – American Airlines, Delta and JetBlue – had operated 115 nonstop flights per week to San Juan from JFK, according to the report. JFK is a major hub for JetBlue, with other recently-launched Caribbean destinations including Havana, Cuba, and Curacao. The airline also recently expanded its premium Mint service to St. Lucia, and it expanded its flights from JFK to Grenada to a daily schedule.

“No one likes to lose frequencies, but I am sure that the demand for the destination will prompt other airlines to step in,” Segarra says. “Access has never been a problem to come to Puerto Rico.”
