California Street Cable Car Line to Close for Improvements

Powell Street cable carStarting in January 2011, improvements to the California Street cable car line and roadway will close the cable car line for six months through July 2011 in phase two of ongoing improvements. During the six month renovation of the California Street cable car line, Muni bus shuttles will operate substitute service from 6 a.m. until midnight. These will stop at regular California cable car stops, with the exception of the event of temporary relocation of bus stops due to construction. The cable car system on California Street last underwent renovation in 1984.

For the duration of this period, San Francisco's signature cable cars will continue to operate on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde lines. These lines will also close for safety improvements during two partial weekday shutdowns and one week of a full shutdown in mid- to late-spring, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) said.
