Exclusive: Haiti-Based Airline to Launch First Nonstop Flights From U.S.

Sunrise Airways, an airline based in Haiti, will be introducing its first nonstop flights from the U.S. to Port-au-Prince and Travel Agent has the scoop.

A spokesperson for the airline told us on Tuesday that Sunrise is targeting a start date of October 17 for the new service. The initial route will connect Orlando with Port-au-Prince, nonstop for the first time, according to a Sunrise spokesperson. Travel Agent was also told that this is only the tip of the iceberg with more U.S. flights to Haiti expected to be announced by Sunrise by the end of the year.

Sunrise will operate an Airbus A320 on the route with business and coach seating. There will be a total capacity of 150 passengers.

This will be Sunrise Airways' first nonstop flights from the U.S. to Haiti. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Air France and Spirit Airlines all fly nonstop to Haiti from the U.S.

The new flights will operate three times a week. The Orlando-Haiti flights will depart on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays while return flights back to the U.S. will leave on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

From its hub in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian-owned carrier operates daily scheduled passenger service connecting key gateways across the region with the world.

Sunrise Airways currently serves Santo Domingo (SDQ and JBQ) and Santiago (STI) in the Dominican Republic; Havana (HAV), Camaguey (CMW) and Santiago de Cuba (SCU) in Cuba; and Cap Haitien (CAP). New flights to/from Orlando, Florida (MCO); Kingston, Jamaica (KIN); Providenciales, Turks and Caicos (PLS); and Nassau, Bahamas (NAS) are planned for 2017-2018, pending government approval.

In line with the expansion of its route network, Sunrise Airways has initiated service aboard a 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. Headquartered in Port-au-Prince, Sunrise Airways is a privately owned corporation with registered offices in Haiti.
