Lufthansa Competes on Spanair bid

Lufthansa has joined Portuguese carrier TAP and Spanish tour operator Marsans in a bid for Spanair, which is currently up for sales by Scandinavian carrier SAS. Local newspaper Cinco Dias quoted Spanair sources who stated that Lufthansa plans to use the Spanish carrier to strengthen its presence in southern Europe. TAP also has requested financial information from Spanair, Forbes reported, adding that tour operator Marsans said if it fails in its bid for Spanair, it may consider a bid for Iberia Airlines.
