Lufthansa Strike Cancels Flights at Three German Airports

The Associated Press reports that 113,000 passengers are facing cancelled domestic and international flights Monday due to an all-day walkout at three German airports by a cabin crew union protesting cost-cutting measures. Monday's walkout is set to last from 4:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. in Frankfurt and Duesseldorf and until midnight in Munich (all times local). The strike began on Friday, with a break on Sunday.

The UFO flight attendant union told the AP that it planned to rotate the strike to different airports throughout the week.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Lufthansa said on Sunday that it would make a decision on the "ramifications" of the strike by 6 p.m. local time on Monday. The UFO said that it would not rule out changing its strike plans for Tuesday, depending on Lufthansa's announcement.

The Lufthansa has posted an update to its website saying that, on Tuesday, the strike would affect all Lufthansa longhaul flights to and from Frankfurt between 4:30 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. as well as longhaul flights to and from Munich between 5:00 a.m. and midnight, as well as all flights to and from Dusseldorf between 4:30 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. (all times local).

Flights from Lufthansa Group airlines Lufthansa CityLine, Germanwings, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, SWISS and Brussels Airlines are not affected by the strike actions and will operate as planned.

Lufthansa has also said that passengers on affected flights can rebook free of charge. Additionally, passengers whose flights have not been cancelled and are in possession of Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines or Brussels Airlines tickets for flights between November 6, 2015, and November 13, 2015, from or via Frankfurt, München or Düsseldorf, can rebook once free of charge online.

The following conditions must be observed:

  • Rebooking within the same booking class
  • Tickets must be issued on/before November 6, 2015
  • New date of travel must be on/before February 28, 2016
  • Change of origin/destination and class of service/compartment are not permitted
  • For all other ticket conditions, original fare conditions apply
