Stats: Delta Most On-Time North American Airline in 2022

Delta Air Lines has been named by Cirium as the most on-time airline based in North America for 2022. It additionally received the aviation analytics company’s Cirium Platinum Award for “global operational excellence”—the second straight year the airline has won. Among the factors considered for the award are on-time performance, operational complexity and an airline’s ability to limit the impact of flight disruption to its passengers.

The most on-time airline globally, however, was Brazil-based Azul Airlines. Beyond these, Thai AirAsia came out on top for Asia Pacific, Oman Air for the Middle East and Africa, and Iberia in Europe, while StarFlyer was the leading low-cost carrier.

When it comes to the top-performing airports, Haneda Airport in Tokyo was ranked first, followed by Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru in Bangalore, India, and Salt Lake City International Airport in the U.S.

According to Cirium, airlines in 2022 had difficulty anticipating the sudden recovery in demand. When the recovery finally came (and stayed) this past year, the industry—including airlines, airports, air navigation providers and other stakeholders—struggled with understaffing and insufficient capacity. Delays and cancelations became issues. In time, however, operations greatly improved as the industry added workers and adjusted capacity.
