The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort
The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort will be Tobago’s first large branded resort in 12 years.

Tobago, like most islands in the Caribbean with a more popular “sister,” is often considered, at best, a decent day-trip option by clients who prefer to stay on its more frequently visited neighbor, Trinidad. However, with its first branded large-sized resort in 12 years, the chips are in place for Tobago to reverse the roles, making this friendly sibling rivalry a potential goldmine for agents.

Travel Agent got the skinny on the soon-to-open Magdalena Grand Beach Resort and then spoke with Warren Solomon, Tobago’s director of tourism, about the impact the opening will have on the future of this destination.

About the Resort

The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort will open its doors in November. The 200-room oceanfront hotel will have five fine and casual dining options, an 18-hole PGA-designed golf course, expansive beachfront, multiple swimming pools, generously sized and flexible meeting/event space, and the newest spa on the island.

All the accommodations on the property are deluxe oceanfront rooms with a large furnished terrace. Each comes with, among others, a large bathroom with separate shower and tub, and flat-screen TVs.

The hotel’s location puts leisure guests mere footsteps away from one of the island’s many pristine, powdery white-sand beaches. For the active traveler, it will have a full-service water sports and dive shop, two lighted tennis courts and a well-equipped fitness center. Guests will also have the opportunity to sample varied cuisines from locations that range from poolside casual to fine dining.

Tobago is the quintessential Caribbean island with secluded beaches, quaint villages and award-winning eco-attractions that include the Main Ridge rainforest, the oldest protected reserve in the western hemisphere.

Hyatt in Trinidad Goes Pink

Since this issue of Travel Agent pays tribute to Breast Cancer Awareness month (see page 38), we thought it would be fitting to tell you what the Hyatt Regency Trinidad is doing for the cause.

In addition to hoisting pink flags in the front plaza and lighting the side of the property with pink lights, the hotel’s Spa Esencia is donating 20 percent of all sales of “Pretty in Pink” treatments during October to the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society and The Cancer Treatment Foundation.

Spa-goers get 20 percent off on all treatments (excluding “Pretty in Pink”) when they book an appointment with a friend. The hotel will also donate to these same organizations 20 percent of proceeds from Cinnamon patisserie’s afternoon tea on Mondays and Wednesdays through October 31.

Ten Percent Plus Override

The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort gives a standard 10 percent commission on all agent bookings based on published rates. It has also announced a 5 percent override incentive for agents making multiple bookings during 2012, apart from the discounted introductory rates.

Agents can contact Reservations Manager Saha Smith (868-660-8800, [email protected]) for further queries.
