Stats: Domestic Spring Break Trips Up 24%

Spring break travel is up again this year, according to the latest Allianz Global Assistance Top 10 Spring Break Destinations survey. According to the report, domestic spring break trips are up 24 percent year-over-year, while international getaways are up 18 percent. Allianz defines a spring break getaway as a five-to-eight-day trip that takes place between February 21 and April 19.

Based on the company’s analysis of more than 2.7 million flight itineraries, for the fourth year in a row Orlando and Cancun are the most popular spring break destinations for American travelers.

In terms of international travel, Mexico in particular will see another busy spring break with Cancun, Mexico (13.4 percent, no change from last year), San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico (9.1 percent, no change from last year), and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (6.3 percent, up a spot from last year) leading the list. Other Top 10 International Destinations include Nassau, Bahamas (5.8 percent, down a spot from last year), Montego Bay, Jamaica (5.1 percent, up three spots from last year), Aruba, Aruba (4.8 percent, no change from last year), Providenciales, Turks and Caicos (3.9 percent, up a spot from last year), London, United Kingdom (3.8 percent, reappearing on the Top 10 list for first time since 2018), Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (3.3 percent, up a spot from last year) and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (2.6 percent, down three spots from last year).

London is the only non-Caribbean destination in the Top 10 International Destinations list, which saw some movement in rankings from last year: the Bahamas, still recovering from Hurricane Dorian, slips a spot; Jamaica, which will enjoy silver screen airtime as a backdrop in April's "No Time to Die" James Bond 007 blockbuster, rose three spots; and the Dominican Republic, which showed resilience in last year's Thanksgiving travel survey despite negative publicity surrounding a number of tourist deaths, dropped three spots for Spring Break.

Orlando maintained its status as the top domestic hotspot (7.8 percent, no change from last year), perhaps thanks in part to new immersive experiences like Walt Disney World Resort's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opening, Allianz said. Following in popularity for domestic spring break travel are: Phoenix (5.3 percent, no change from last year), Las Vegas (4.3 percent, no change from last year), Los Angeles (3.9 percent, up one spot from last year), New York (3.7 percent, down one spot from last year), Fort Lauderdale (3.7 percent, no change from last year), Fort Myers (3.6 percent, no change from last year), Miami (3.1 percent, no change from last year), Salt Lake City (2.8 percent, no change from last year) and Tampa (2.7 percent, no change from last year).
