Stats: New York, Cancun Top Holiday Travel Destinations

Holiday travel will be up 34 percent in 2021 compared to 2020, according to Allianz Partners USA's “Top 10 Holiday Destinations” survey. The research also found that Americans are planning trips to New York City and Cancun as their top domestic and international locations, respectively, this holiday season.

After reviewing 4 million itineraries for round-trip flights departing from U.S. airports beginning Saturday, December 18 and returning by Thursday, December 30, the travel insurance and assistance company found that 87 percent of the itineraries reviewed are for domestic travel and 13 percent are for international travel.

With fewer travel restrictions and availability of the COVID-19 vaccine, Americans are putting their travel plans in motion this holiday season. New York (No. 1) made its return as the favored destination after slipping out of the top 10 last year, followed by Seattle (No. 2) which was 2020’s top holiday destination. Americans are also planning trips to warm-weather destinations including Orlando (No. 3), Los Angeles (No. 4) and Phoenix (No. 5). The only New England contender, Boston (No. 6), follows, with Atlanta (No. 7), Las Vegas (No. 8), Salt Lake City (No. 9) and Dallas-Fort Worth rounding out the top 10 list for domestic holiday travels.

Travelers seeking an international holiday getaway are putting three destinations in Mexico on their holiday wish lists and checking them twice. Cancun (No. 1) came out on top this year, followed by San Jose Del Cabo (No. 2) and Puerto Vallarta (No. 3). With five Caribbean destinations featured in the top 10 international ranking—Montego Bay, Jamaica (No. 4), Oranjestad, Aruba (No. 5), Nassau, Bahamas (No. 7), Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (No. 8) and Providenciales, Turks and Caicos (No. 9)—it’s fair to say Americans are looking for a winter escape and a warmer change of scenery this year. Two European destinations made the list, as well—London at No. 6 and Paris at No. 10.
