U.S. Travel Agency July Air Ticket Sales Increase 69 Percent Year-Over-Year

Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) last week released data showing ARC-accredited travel agency air ticket sales totaling $6.8 billion in July 2022, a 69 percent year-over-year increase from July 2021. The average U.S. round-trip air travel ticket price was $555 in July 2022, up 21 percent from July 2021 and 8 percent lower than June 2022. This marks the second consecutive month of declining average ticket price.

Month over month, July 2022 results showed:

  • Total sales decreased 13 percent
  • Total passenger trips down 8 percent
  • U.S. domestic trips decreased 6 percent
  • International trips decreased 10 percent

“We’re seeing the monthly average ticket price decline earlier in the year than usual,” said Steve Solomon, chief commercial officer at ARC, noted in a press release that average ticket prices are dropping earlier in the year as usual and that, looking to the remainder of the year, he expects to see a continued increase in business travel as the summer vacation season winds down.

Total passenger trips settled by ARC in July 2022 increased 18 percent year over year from 16.8 million to 19.9 million, led by a 50 percent year-over-year increase in international trips, which totaled 7 million. U.S. domestic trips increased 6 percent to 12.8 million over the same period.

EMD (electronic miscellaneous document) sales increased 90 percent year over year to $13,610,107. EMD transactions increased 58 percent to 239,779 over the same period. Note: EMDs represent ancillary services (e.g. premium seats) and other miscellaneous services settled separately from the airline ticket used for travel.

ARC pulls data from 237 airlines and over 10,600 retail agency locations.
