Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau Debuts Initiative on Mindful Travel

The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) and the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau (KVB) have launched a video series as part of their collective work in destination management. The educational videos are guided by the Kauaʻi Destination Management Action Plan (DMAP) and showcase the island’s dedication to regenerative tourism. The videos focus on enabling travelers to understand Kaua‘i’s culture, environment and pono (mindful) travel, prior to arrival.

“We are pleased to showcase two of four destination management educational videos specifically for Kaua‘i to reinforce our island community’s commitment to regenerative tourism and mindful travel, said Sue Kanoho, executive director, KVB. “The cultural value of mālama (to care for and protect) is central to our way of life, and this video series is designed to advocate this value and to educate visitors and residents.”

The Kaua‘i DMAP is a three-year plan (2021-2023) with a goal to rebuild, redefine and reset the direction of tourism. A 21-member steering committee representing members of the community, visitor industry and other sectors developed action items aimed at better managing its land and natural resources, preserving Kaua‘i’s culture and improving the quality of life for its residents.

“In addition to enhancing the visitor experience, these educational videos will inspire mindful travel and preserve Hawai‘i’s natural resources and cultural values,” said Patti Ornellas, destination manager, KVB. “KVB’s DMAP initiative reinforces the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s overarching mission of Mālama Ku‘u Home (caring for my beloved home) and enhances the quality of living in Hawai‘i for generations to come.”

Also known as the “Garden Island,” Kaua‘i offers more than 50 miles of white sand beaches. Other natural wonders include the 3,567-foot-deep Waimea Canyon, often called “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and the 3,000-foot sea cliffs of the Nāpali Coast.

Kaua‘i also offers a range of outdoor activities, including helicopter and boat tours, kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, mountain tubing, horseback riding, ATV adventures and zip-line tours.
