Mexico’s Most Instagrammed Landmarks

Popular for its beaches, ancient ruins, dynamic cities, cuisine and rich culture, there have been 91 million posts made under the hashtag #Mexico on Instagram. But, for those Insta-savvy travelers looking for backdrops for their grid pics and reels, what are Mexico’s most Instagrammed landmarks?

To find out, Remitly, which specializes in sending money to Mexico, has researched the most popular attractions and destinations in Mexico according to Instagram. Compiling a list of Mexico’s most famous and recognizable places, Remitly has analyzed millions of hashtags used to label Instagram posts to reveal the most popular landmarks and tourist attractions in Mexico.

As a result, Chichen Itza holds the top position. Located in the Yucatan Peninsula, Chichen Itza is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world, and was recently named one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World." Almost 1,000 years old, this ancient Mayan city was once home to a diverse population of Mayan people. Today, the site houses remnants of ancient structures, including the heavily pictured El Castillo pyramid. This landmark has a wealth of history to see and learn about, with UNESCO even naming Chichen Itza as a World Heritage Site in 1988.

As over 2 million tourists visit Chichen Itza annually to explore its architectural wonders and gain further insight into its history. This landmark has garnered over 1 million Instagram hashtags to date.

Taking second spot is Teotihuacan. Situated just under an hour outside of Mexico City, Teotihuacan is an ancient Mesoamerican city. This landmark was built by hand more than a thousand years before the Aztecs reached it in the 1400s and gave it its name meaning “the place where the gods were created." While much of this city's history remains a mystery, the intrigue and beauty surrounding it has led to over 800,000 images being taken and posted on Instagram. Containing around 2,000 single-story apartment compounds, as well as various pyramids, plazas, temples and palaces of nobles and priests, there is much to explore and capture at Teotihuacan.

At number three is Zócalo, the historic center of Mexico City, making it a vibrant, bustling and exciting place to be. Standing as the largest plaza in Latin America, the square sits against the stunning backdrop of the Spanish colonial cathedral. As a centerpiece of public gatherings since the days of the Aztecs, Zócalo has a deep history. The square itself, known as Plaza de la Constitución, has over 19,000 pictures under the hashtag #plazadelaconstitucion. With so much to explore, #Zócalo has over 600,000 posts, showcasing the best of what Mexico has to offer—taquerias, murals, secret spots, and captivating architecture.
