London Underground Workers on Strike

September 7, 2010 By: Jena Tesse Fox

Employees of two major rail workers unions in London have begun a one-day strike in a debate over job cuts, severely delaying or even canceling trains along various routes.

The Guardian and other sources are reporting that there were suspensions and delays on all the tube lines apart from the Northern line. There were no services at all on the Circle, Piccadilly, Victoria and Waterloo and City lines.

Mike Brown, London Underground's managing director, reportedly said that the company is "doing everything possible" to keep the trains operating. Extra buses have been ordered to compensate for the lack of trains.

As threatened, the first wave of strikes began at 5 p.m local yesterday, when maintenance workers staged a walkout, followed at 9 p.m. by drivers, station staff and signallers at the RMT and TSSA unions. Other strikes have been scheduled for October 3, November 2 and November 28.
