Five wildfires around Los Angeles—the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Lidia and Sunset fires—have forced the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people, burning over 29,000 acres of land, according to CBS News.
Beyond the evacuations, many Los Angeles-area attractions have closed due to the fires. The Getty Center will be closed through January 12, while the Getty Villa will be closed through January 13. The Griffith Observatory’s website says it will be close all day Thursday, January 9, but has not shared if that closure will extend beyond today.
Similarly, Universal Studios Hollywood will be closed Thursday. The studio tours at Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. have been canceled, as well, through at least today. Six Flags Magic Mountain, which is near the Hurst Fire, is also closed for the time being, it said on X (formerly Twitter). Disneyland remains open.
While Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is open and operating normally, although passengers should check their flight status directly with their airline. Carriers including American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and United have issues travel waivers for travel into the Los Angeles area. That said, FlightAware reports that LAX has only had 13 canceled and 41 delayed flights Thursday.
On the accommodations side, most hotels remain open and are accepting evacuees. The Hotel Association of Los Angeles said in a statement: “We are devastated by the destruction of the fires raging across the Los Angeles region. Hotels are currently taking in thousands of Angelenos who have been displaced by the Palisades, Eaton and Hurst fires. Many of our hotels are providing guests with discounted rates and the necessities they may have left behind in their evacuation, including toiletries. Many hotels are also taking in pets. Our hotels are also working to donate bedding and personal care items to temporary shelters. We stand ready to continue assisting Angelenos and first responders during this crisis.”
