This week our cruise editor, Susan J.  Young, is sailing on a cruise in the Mediterranean. This slide show provides a visual look at some of the new or refreshed areas onboard the 102,853-ton Carnival Sunshine, the former Carnival Destiny, which has recently set sail after a $155 million makeover.

Two new decks and 182 new staterooms have been added for a total of 1,503 staterooms. Here is a slide show of a few of the other key areas onboard.

Cloud 9 Spa: This new spa echoes the feeling guests get onboard Carnival Breeze. Soft tones, soothing spaces and unusual treatments await. The new thermal suite features a Tepidarium with tiled loungers facing the ocean. Ninety-two new spa staterooms have wellness-related perks including fitness classes and access to the thermal suite.

SportSquare: Frequent cruisers may recall that Carnival Destiny had a mini-golf course and track on Decks 10 and 11. Now those features are not only updated but the entire area has been expanded and transformed into a more robust open-air recreation complex. Guests enjoy a ropes course, small lighted basketball course, shuffleboard, as well as ping pong, foosball and billiards. And if clients get the munchies, they may head for the new hot dog cart.

WaterWorks: The Carnival fleet’s longest slide ever, totaling 334 feet, is found on Carnival Sunshine. Couples might race each other down dual 235-foot racing slides. Parents might also relax in lounge chairs as their smaller children climb to milder slides, or stand under a water bucket that “tips.”

Serenity: The ship boasts the largest Serenity complex at sea. Designed strictly for adults, this three-deck enclave of relaxation spaces has  a waterfall that descends from the whirlpool on the top deck into the pool two decks below. Lounge chairs, clamshell-like covered loungers and tables with umbrellas, as well as an outdoor, covered bar provide plenty of space for cruisers to spread out.

EA Sports Bar: Located within the atrium, the new EA Sports Bar has black and red décor, four massive video screens behind the bar, and other screens around the venue. Real-time sports scores are provided via a tickertape and the colorful bar is adjacent to the casino.
