Bonaire announced a public private partnership program focused on sustainability; this will culminate in October, when the island will declare itself the world’s first-ever Blue Destination.

The first Caribbean island to create a protected marine park, Bonaire carries a history of conservation efforts. Sustainability is a focus of the island’s economic development plan and about 40 percent of the island uses clean energy.

The island will hold meetings, events and conferences around becoming a Blue Destination and sustainable use of ocean resources. Bonaire will launch a social mediate campaign “What is Blue to You?” and encourage citizens to use the hashtag #BonaireBlueDestination. Through these efforts, residents will be encouraged to become involved in the island’s conservation and marketing work.

This will conclude on October 10, when the island will hold a community event in relation to the Bonaire International Sailing Regatta. At this occasion, Bonaire will declare itself a Blue Destination.

Bonaire is a Dutch island municipality situated 86 miles east of Aruba, outside of the hurricane belt. Known for its scuba diving and snorkeling, the island waters provide divers views of coral formations and an abundant fish population.

Bonaire offers the opportunity for sea and mangrove kayaking, windsurfing, kite boarding and more. Visitors have the choice of staying at oceanfront resorts, condominiums, guesthouses, small inns or villas.
