Las Alcobas, Mexico City Reopens With Upgrades

Luxury boutique hotel, Las Alcobas in Mexico City, has reopened following a one-year closure during the pandemic. The hotel has reopened with refurbished guestrooms and suites, elevated services and the introduction of new “Best of Mexico City: Curated Experiences by Las Alcobas,” a menu of upscale tours and insider add-ons that explore the history, art and cuisine of the city.

The hotel is located in the heart of Polanco district. Intersected by Avenida Presidente Masaryk, the “Rodeo Drive of Mexico City,” the neighborhood is green with parks and flowering jacarandas, dotted with private homes, art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants and cafes with sidewalk tables. It is also only minutes away, or even walking distance, from the most important corporate offices, embassies and international headquarters.

A former grand residential building, the seven-story property was designed by interior design firm Yabu Pushelberg, the talent behind the aesthetic of Prada, Louis Vuitton and Four Seasons. Original artwork and ironwork, earth-toned furnishings, and a softly splashing fountain give the lobby a mid-century feel fused with a modern, spa-like ambiance; a spiral stairway curls upward like a ribbon of polished rosewood.

The 35 guestrooms and suites, including three Penthouse Suites with open terraces, now sport a fresh look. The rooms have 50-inch LCD televisions, air-filtration systems and automated central controls. The spa-inspired, all-marble bathrooms contain a menu of locally made handmade soaps, eight-jet rain showers, enclosed WC with integrated bidets, and bathrobes.

The hotel’s restaurant, Anatol, is overseen by chef Rodrigo del Valle, and serves inventive cuisine and creative cocktails. The restaurant uses locally and sustainably sourced ingredients. Available only to guests, its breakfast centers around in-house pastries and authentic Mexican dishes.

There is also a Fitness Center and the Aurora Spa, an intimate space offering Naturopathica, Cinq Mondes and Neal’s Yard products and authentic therapies such as the signature Mayan Healing Ritual. For business meetings and functions, the hotel has two private rooms for gatherings of up to 60, planning and catering services, and state-of-the-art equipment.

A variety of restaurants and cafes, as well as art and history offerings are within walking distance. The pathways of Bosque de Chapultepec (the city’s main park), home to the world-renowned Museum of Anthropology, are just a 15-minute walk away. The city’s best sights are easily accessed through the hotel’s new “Best of Mexico City: Curated Experiences by Las Alcobas,” a collection of carefully planned, half- and full-day private tours complete with experienced guides, luxury vehicles and drivers, tickets, even restaurant reservations.

Popular options include the “Birth of the New City–Burial of a Civilization,” exploring the Aztec roots and Spanish colonial new buildings with the Metropolitan Cathedral and surrounding palaces, many now repurposed as exhibition spaces; and the “Art Experience,” which focuses on the poignant love story of muralist Diego Rivera and his partner, the painter Frida Kahlo (their homes and galleries, now open for visitors, are just as they left them) and the town of Coyocan. The “Culinary Experience” is a grazing tour of local flavors from tacos to tequilas, while the “Teotihuacan Experience” takes travelers 25 miles northeast of the city to the complex of Teotihuacan.

Guests are also encouraged to design their own experiences around personal preferences and interests. Shopping in Polanco and beyond, a dawn balloon-ride over the pyramids, an after-closing-time tour of the city’s anthropological museum, an introduction to the architecture of Luis Barragán, a barge tour through Xochimilco with a gourmet lunch in a typical chinampa or floating garden; day trips to Taxco (Mexico’s “silver capital”) and Puebla (the city of churches), are just some of the à la carte options. It is highly encouraged that guests at Las Alcobas reserve their Experiences at the time of booking for better planning purposes or during a “Stay-strategy” meeting with the hotel’s Clef D’Or Concierge on the day of arrival.

Las Alcobas is a member of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, and the only Mexico City property in the Collection. Rates start at $465 per night, double occupancy. All rates are commissionable to travel advisors at 10 percent. Consult with the hotel for Suite Special Commissions. For reservations and more information, visit www.lasalcobas.com
