Three American tourists staying at Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma, Bahamas, died over the weekend. A fourth guest has been airlifted to Princess Margaret Hospital. In a Facebook group titled Travel Advisors Selling the Caribbean, it was revealed that two of the deceased were Robbie and Michael Phillips, who were members of the travel advisor community.
One advisor wrote, "I met [Robbie] in St. Lucia[. R]ode with her on the shuttle and talked with her for a very long time at dinner!!!!!!! I just can’t believe this and she was a true role model for [travel advisors]!"
"Heartbreaking. She was SUCH a kind leader within Sandals," wrote another.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, one adult male was found unresponsive in his villa bedroom, while another couple were found unresponsive in a second villa—the male in the bathroom and the female in the bedroom. Both of the latter two showed signs of convulsion; no trauma was detected among any of the three. The police report notes that the couple complained of an illness the night earlier. They attended a local medical facility, received treatment and returned to the resort, the report says.
The police are still awaiting the result of an autopsy for all three. The Bahamas’ Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. I. Chester Cooper, said on Facebook that foul play is not suspected.
According to ABC News, the woman who was airlifted to the hospital is in stable condition. ABC additionally reports that authorities are investigating whether there was a public health hazard—although it’s believed to be an isolated incident.
In a statement, Sandals said, “Nothing is more important to Sandals Resorts than the safety of our guests. It is with deep sadness that we can confirm the passing of three guests at Emerald Bay Resort on May 6, 2022. A health emergency was initially reported and following our protocols, we immediately alerted emergency medical professionals and relevant local authorities to provide support and investigate the situation. We are actively working to support both the investigation as well as the guests’ families in every way possible during this difficult time.”
