Online travel booking site Omio has revealed the best airports that offer travelers a stress-free experience. Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) ranked as the best airport in Europe overall, thanks to all of the examined facilities and a wide range of stores and restaurants. In addition, the airport showed few flight cancelations and above-average flight punctuality, making Madrid the most customer-friendly and least stressful airport in Europe.

Rome's Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport came in at second place, with an overall score of 93.4 out of 100, followed by Amsterdam's Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which scored 90.4 of 100 overall.

Copenhagen Airport was named the fourth best overall; however, it topped the rankings in terms of connectivity, with three different public transport options covering the five-mile distance between the city’s central train station and the airport. Alternatively, London Heathrow ranked in seventh place overall, but received first place for facilities, due to the 33 lounges across the terminals.

The Least Stressful Airports in Europe

For this study, Omio analyzed the main airports across 30 European capital cities for four main factors (connectivity, facilities, entertainment and stress-causing factors) that contribute to making the airport experience enjoyable for travelers.

Connectivity was established by the distance and the number of public transport options connecting the airport to the city center. Showers, hotels, smoking areas, rest and relaxation areas, airport lounges, public charging stations and pharmacies were evaluated to determine the quality and abundance of facilities. The number of stores, restaurants and bars was also examined to evaluate entertainment options during long waiting times. And, finally, an analysis of stress-causing factors, including flight cancelations and delays, the number of daily air passengers, traffic congestion and the average price of a taxi, also contributed to the final ranking of the most convenient European capital airports.
