Oneworld Airline Alliance Adds New Program to Fill in Coverage

Major airline alliance oneworld has announced a new program called oneworld connect. The new program will expand some of oneworld’s benefits to areas served by airlines that cannot meet oneworld’s requirements, the organization reports.

Oneworld has announced Fiji Airways as the first member of this program. The airline alliance has not said when Fiji Airways will begin to offer the program’s benefits. When the time comes, Fiji Airways and future oneworld connect partners will offer oneworld members priority access to check-in desks for all Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby frequent flyers. Emerald and Sapphire members will also receive priority boarding.

To join oneworld connect, a potential partner must have at least three oneworld members sponsor it. Fiji Airways’ sponsors will be the four founding members of oneworld: American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas. Possible partners must also maintain IATA IOSA safety certification.

Oneworld connect partners will offer additional benefits to their sponsor airlines and vice versa. These benefits include through check-in of bags and passengers as well as access to select lounges at key airports for certain customers. If a oneworld connect airline offers a frequent flyer program, customers can earn and redeem mileage rewards through either airline as well as earn frequent flyer status points.

Oneworld connect is oneworld’s first new membership platform since the alliance was founded 20 years ago.
