Stats: 53 Percent of Americans to Travel for Labor Day Weekend

As summer comes to an unofficial end this weekend, The Vacationer has shared its "Labor Day 2022" travel survey and found that 53 percent of Americans (137 million people) plan to travel over the long weekend.

When asked if and how they would travel this weekend, 36 percent said “primarily by car,” while another 14 percent said by plane. Three percent replied with public transportation. The Vacationer points out that, according to its research, more Americans will travel for Labor Day than they did for Memorial Day Weekend or Fourth of July this year.

Generally, younger people were more likely to reply that they had plans to travel this Labor Day. Only 32 percent of Americans over age 60 will travel for Labor Day; however, 60 percent of travelers aged 18 to 29 and 30 to 44 (or, 60 percent of all travelers from 18 to 44) said they will be traveling. Following closely are 56 percent of Americans aged 45 to 60 who said they will.

Respondents were split evenly on whether gas prices would affect their travel plans. These numbers remained consistent with The Vacationer’s Fourth of July travel findings, suggesting, “even though gas prices have come down some in recent weeks, travelers are still feeling the crunch of the gas surge of the past year.”

The plurality (49 percent) of the planned road trips will be within 100 miles of the respondent’s home. Another 26 percent said the road trip would be within 250 miles of home. Surprisingly, 10 percent of all road trips would be 500 miles or more this weekend, with about 5 percent saying they would travel over 1,000 miles from their home.

Methodology: This 2022 Labor Day Travel Survey was conducted by Survey Monkey on behalf of The Vacationer. In total, 1,098 Americans over the age of 18 were polled on August 6.
