Due to increased travel to and from Omaha, the Omaha Airport Authority has announced a $950 million terminal expansion project that will nearly double the size of the city’s airport, Omaha Eppley Airfield (OMA). The makeover will also add significant traveler amenities and two international gates. The initial phase of the Build OMA construction project is underway, with work expected to be completed in 2028.
“Airline passenger demand continues to grow in Omaha, with several months last year seeing record-breaking passenger counts,” said Deborah Ward, executive director of Visit Omaha. “This expansion project further demonstrates the increasing popularity of Omaha.”
The Omaha Airport Authority said that in 2023 OMA recorded its second busiest year in history with more than 5 million passengers traveling through the airport, surpassing 2019 pre-pandemic levels.
The nearly billion-dollar expansion project will include larger gate boarding areas, expanded baggage claim, more restaurant and retail shops beyond the security checkpoint, and a new automated inline baggage handling system which will make security screenings safer, faster and more convenient.
“OMA currently offers non-stop flights to 31 of the busiest airports in the country. Convention and event planners have long praised the city’s central location and ease of Omaha’s airport,” added Ward. “Our airport is just four miles from the downtown convention and event district, and this new expansion and modernization plan will only enhance the airport’s convenience.”
