Roma Experience Launches the Restoring Caravaggio Tour

Roma Experience, an Italy tour operator, is launching its Restoring Caravaggio Tour in cooperation with the Restoration Lab Merlini-Storti.

The company specializes in guided tours of Rome and the Vatican. The Restoring Caravaggio Tour was created to showcase the way one of the top restoration labs in Italy returns paintings to their original luster. Restoration is designed to convey the emotion and message the painter intended.

In the Restoring Caravaggio Tour, guests will tour the “Caravaggio Path” in Rome's city center, stepping into three churches with artwork including the Cycle of St. Matthew, the Conversion of St. Paul and the Madonna dei Pellegrini: a favorite of the people of Rome and a painting restored by the lab.

The tour finishes by giving travelers a behind-the-scenes exclusive tour of the lab where they can understand the techniques and knowledge needed to restore artwork. They will experience how to create the colors used hundreds of years ago along with how to clean the surface of over 400-year-old masterpieces.

The Merlini-Storti Restoration Lab was founded in the late 1980’s by Valeria Merlini and Daniela Storti, two prominent restorers in Italy. Some of their works include the restoration of three Caravaggio paintings and the frescoes in the papal apartments.

The Restoring Caravaggio Experience starts at € 245/per person and runs every day except Saturday and Sunday.
