The Cancun Hotel Zone could see the opening of a new public beach club at one of the zone’s most popular areas.
The new project would be the Tortugas Beach Club, located in the Cancun Hotel Zone. According to the proposal, if given the green light, the Tortugas Beach Club would offer “Construction and operation of a beach club, which will consist of a specialty restaurant, bar, beach club, sun areas, rest areas, commercial premises and common areas and services." The total area of the property is over 34,000 square feet.
The space that would be home to the new beach club is the old Fat Tuesday disco, which was located at Playa Tortugas until it was demolished in 2017. The area has been popular with both locals and tourists, having seen its highlight in the 1990s when it was used by spring break crowds and became the stage for MTV videos.
However, after Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and legal issues after that, the building was eventually shut down and remained closed until it was torn down last year. For several years, attempts have been made to revitalize the area and use that space.
