Criterion Travel Debuts 2026 Total Solar Eclipse Trip to Spain

Criterion Travel is now accepting reservations for a journey to northern Spain, from August 7–15, 2026, timed to witness the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026. Open to independent travelers, the nine-day program is highlighted by a private viewing experience at the Tiedra Astronomy Center, which is directly in the eclipse path with an expected totality of one minute and 13 seconds.

Led by astrophysicist Dr. Michael Shara, curator of astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and adjunct professor of astronomy at Columbia University, the program blends scientific discovery with cultural immersion. Dr. Shara, a veteran eclipse expedition leader, will offer in-depth lectures throughout the trip and host special programming on eclipse day, including a late-night viewing of the perfectly timed Perseid meteor shower.

Participants will travel through some of Spain’s most celebrated cities and landscapes, from Madrid’s world-famous Prado Museum to the medieval charm of Segovia and Burgos, concluding in Bilbao with a visit to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Along the way, guests will enjoy regional cuisine, luxury accommodations—including a wine estate spa hotel in Zamora—and the opportunity to appreciate Spain’s vibrant culture and architecture.

Highlights of this 2026 total solar eclipse trip include:

  • Private eclipse viewing at the Tiedra Astronomy Center in Zamora, one of the most optimal locations in the eclipse’s path due to its late-day timing, clear horizon views and statistically high chances of clear skies
  • Lectures and insights along the way from expert astronomer Dr. Shara
  • Luxury accommodations at 4- and 5-star hotels including the Wellington in Madrid and the Meliá in Bilbao
  • Visits to major cultural sites, including the UNESCO-listed Segovia Aqueduct, Burgos Cathedral and the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

This educational tour is capped at 40 guests to ensure an intimate and enriching experience. Price is $9,990 per person sharing accommodations, with a $2,000 single supplement. Rates include accommodations, meals, excursions, expert lectures, gratuities, and more.
